About The Table Talks Project

The Table Talks Project is a new concept, based on Deliberative Polling®, which uses well-tested practices for encouraging informed, inclusive, and non-partisan engagement. It is a collaboration between the The Stanford Center for Deliberative Democracy, and Net Zero Together (a project of the Commonwealth Club of California).

The material for these events has been drawn from the America in One Room: Climate and Energy Deliberative Poll (Sept. 2021), which brought together 962 Americans from across the country to learn about these issues through deliberation with peers with different backgrounds and insights.

If participants in these Table Talks like the approach, The Table Talks Project hopes to offer the experience to many more people, on this and other policy issues.

The Center for Deliberative Democracy at Stanford University will continue to house The Table Talk Project going forward as a not-for-profit civic education tool.

About The Table Talks Project

The Table Talks Project is designed to offer people information on major issues in a way that is engaging, empowering, and accessible from any location with internet service.

The design and material for these events draws upon the America in One Room: Climate and Energy Deliberative Poll (Sept. 2021), which brought together 962 Americans from across the country to learn what Americans think about greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere and options for reducing them, when they have access to factually verifiable information and a chance to consider the topic with others, in a respectful atmosphere. For more information on Deliberative polling, see this link.)

This activity is a pilot. The contributors (below) are testing this method of sharing information with people for the purpose of empowering them to come to their own conclusions regarding specific policy proposals based on independently verifiable information. If participants in the July 2022 Table Talks on Climate and Energy enjoy and value the experience, The Table Talks Project hopes to offer more events to many more people in the future, on this and other policy issues.

The Center for Deliberative Democracy at Stanford University will continue to house The Table Talk Project going forward as a not-for-profit civic education tool.
